| Taking a Medical Exam |

Applying for life insurance does not always require you to take a medical exam. It really depends on the underwriting policies of each life insurance company. For instance, Group Life Insurance plans often offered by employers rarely require a medical exam and are often "guaranteed issue." However, all insurance companies use age as a base for calculating your premium rates, and some medical and lifestyle questions may be part of the company’s life insurance application. A “no medical exam” pass can also be offered to relatively young and healthy persons applying for Term Life Insurance. For those who do have to take a medical exam, a nurse or paramedic collects blood and urine samples, along with vital signs such as blood pressure and an electrocardiogram (EKG). Some life insurance companies may request an attending physician’s statement (APS) from your own doctor, but usually your own physician cannot conduct the life insurance application exam. |
